DGCINE carries out first film residency in the DR

For the first time in the history of national cinema, the Dominican Republic is holding a film residency that will benefit six projects in the development phase. This is the Public Competition Residency of the Film Promotion Fund (Fonprocine), which this year has turned the ABC Laboratory into a residency program, with the aim of strengthening the participants’ film ideas.

This residency offers an intensive and immersive work environment, dedicated exclusively to strengthening some of the projects that applied to Fonprocine 2023, allowing filmmakers to focus on their film ideas for a week, without distractions. This space fosters collaboration, experimentation and networking, creating the ideal conditions for the personal and collective growth of the participants.

The program is guided by two renowned film professionals: Emiliano Mazza, Uruguayan director and producer specialized in auteur documentary and art cinema, and Martha Orozco, Mexican filmmaker and producer, member of the Hollywood Academy. Martha, known for her focus on impact filmmaking strategies, has won awards at numerous international festivals and runs a boutique production company that focuses on films with social issues, highlighting diversity and inclusion.

“We are excited about the extraordinary projects that will emerge from this residency, which promises to enrich the filmmaking landscape both nationally and internationally” expressed Marianna Vargas Gurilieva, general director of DGCINE.

The residency includes workshops on: Contracts and co-production agreements, given by Marianna Vargas Gurilieva, general director DGCINE; Brand strategy, by Marcio Migliorisi, in charge of International Relations of the Uruguayan Film and Audiovisual Agency; and the screening of the film Rainbow Gasoline by the Cinemateca Dominicana, a dependency of DGCINE, in its Cinemateca on wheels.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for Dominican cinematography by providing a platform that boosts local talent and promotes the strengthening of its skills and capabilities.
