Dominican Republic and Colombia team up to promote bachata and merengue

The Ministry of Culture (MINC) and the District Institute of the Arts (Idartes) of the Mayor’s Office of Bogota, Colombia, will organize an event in the country from August 5 to 10 this year to promote bachata and merengue, musical genres declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The event, which is supported by the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation of Colombia – APC Colombia, will take place within the framework of the first stage of the project “Capacity building for collaborative work and network building in arts and culture programs aimed at teaching dance to the heritage rhythms of bachata and merengue for the city of Bogota”, within the framework of South-South-Dominican Republic cooperation 2023-2025.

A week-long series of conferences and workshops will be held at the Casa de la Música, located in the Colonial City, with free registration for the public.

In a remote manner, agents of the dance sector in Bogota will also participate in these activities, thanks to the management of the Idartes Dance Department and its cultural facility, La Casona de la Danza.

The main objective of this project is to strengthen collaborative work models and the construction of networks in the training processes in institutions and dance academies focused on the merengue and bachata genres, through the exchange of methodologies that promote the sustainability of the artistic and cultural ecosystem in Bogota, Colombia.

The Dominican Republic will be represented by delegations from the Ministries of Culture; Economy, Planning and Development; and Foreign Affairs.

This initiative takes place in the context of the VII Joint Commission for Technical, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation between the Republic of Colombia and the Dominican Republic for the period 2023-2025.

The protocol ceremony to welcome the Colombian delegation will take place on Monday, August 5 at 5:00 p.m. at the Casa de la Música, after the first day of training coordinated by the Vice-Ministry of Creativity and Artistic Training of the MINC.
