Index carries out activities during “Dominicanidad Week”.

The Institute for Dominicans Abroad (INDEX) celebrated the first edition of the “Dominicanidad INDEX NY 2024 Week” in this city, with the aim of promoting national identity, strengthening the integration of the community residing in the Big Apple with their country of origin and recognizing outstanding Dominicans.

The event was headed by the Vice Minister for Dominican Communities Abroad and Executive Director of Index, Carlos de la Mota, and the head of the Index office in New York, John Sanchez, who highlighted the role of each Dominican living abroad for their communities, as an example for their environment and exalting national pride. The director of Research and Study of Mirex, Pablo Asencio García, also participated in the event.

“Once again we say present fulfilling what was promised by our President Luis Abinader, to accompany our communities on foreign soil to make them feel supported by their government, giving fulfillment, along with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, to a foreign policy that looks after the welfare of Dominicans living abroad,” highlighted Deputy Minister De la Mota.

The inauguration of the “Dominicanity Week INDEX New York 2024”, featured the music of the Afro Dominican band and the screening of the film “Colao 2”, starring actor Manny Perez, who was present. The Dominican Consul in New York, Eligio Jácquez, was also present at the event.

After the screening of the film, recognition was given to Mrs. Carmen M. Baez “Chef Yala”, an outstanding Dominican abroad, for her contributions and culinary offerings in New York City, and to the School of Arts and Humanities – Lehman College (CUNY), for its contribution and support to Dominican culture through the different programs it offers.

Another of the activities carried out in the framework of this event was a visit to the Isabella Home nursing home, where a mangulina show with Ricardo Ureña’s Batey group and the presentation of the Iconos Kids dance group were offered to the elderly residents.

In addition, a painting workshop was held at the Directorate of Culture Abroad, taught by artist Ismael Checo, where those present enjoyed painting landscapes and elements that connected them with the Dominican Republic. Likewise, a friendly triangular baseball game was held in the Rolando Paulino League at St. Mary’s Park, in the Bronx, between the Index, Queens and NY Tigers teams. Former major league player, Carlos Mármol, and Vice Minister Carlos de la Mota were recognized. The “Dominicanidad Week, INDEX NY”, concluded with a dominoes tournament.
