Discover the main sites of the Dominican Republic in one week

It is important to venture to the largest country in the Caribbean to discover all the wonders it has to offer.

From the jungle to the mountains, passing through lakes and national parks, not forgetting the rich history since the arrival of Christopher Columbus. With a vast area of 50,000 m2, the Dominican Republic benefits from a developed road infrastructure that allows you to easily discover several regions during a first trip.

A visit to the capital, Santo Domingo, is a must, with its Colonial City listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitar RDLeaving in February also allows you to enjoy the carnival, a cultural and colorful event.

The Samana peninsula is also a must-see destination, with its green nature and crystal-clear waters.

The national parks, jungle and typical villages also offer unique experiences, accompanied by local music such as bachata and merengue.

Finally, the country offers a variety of accommodations, ranging from large resorts to more intimate but equally elegant luxury hotels in the Dominican Republic. The diversity of lodging options allows to accommodate the different needs and budgets of travelers.

Immerse yourself in the history of the Dominican Republic.

For example by visiting the colonial area and the Malecon in the capital Santo Domingo . After packing your bags at the Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando , a hotel composed of three residences, including the former home of the country’s first governor, head to Calle de las Damas.

The oldest street in the city houses the Jesuit house, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Other historic sites are worth visiting: the fortress, the Maison du Cordon, the Sainte-Marie cathedral and the Saint-Nicolas-de-Bari hospital.

At noon, walk along the Malecon, a 15-kilometer promenade along the Caribbean Sea. The view of the sea is magnificent and there are restaurants where you can taste typical dishes.

Discover nature by visiting Los Haitises National Park.

It is one of the most spectacular and most visited in the Dominican Republic. With an extension of more than 200 km2, the park is home to birds, vultures, pelicans, hummingbirds and albatrosses and high coral cliffs.

The caves of Los Haitises are also a place not to be missed: once used as a refuge by the Taino Indians, one of them, the Arena cave, contains sculpted heads and is inhabited by many bats. Also noteworthy is La Linea cave with its pictographs of birds, bats and whales.

Watch the humpback whales that come to breed in Samaná Bay every winter.

From mid-January to the end of March, more than 3,000 humpback whales migrate to the bay to give birth. Visitors can board a boat in Santa Bárbara de Samaná, where guides provide detailed explanations about the cetaceans and their migration from the Arctic.

The number of boats allowed in the area is regulated and a safety distance of 80 meters is respected so as not to disturb the whales. If you are lucky enough to witness a jump or an interaction between the whales, don’t forget to take pictures to capture this magical moment.

Enjoy the Samaná peninsula with its paradisiacal beaches and fabulous sunsets.

Playa Frontón is an ideal place to relax with a 90-meter high cliff lined with golden sand. Also worth a visit is Playa Rincón, ranked among the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world with crystal clear waters and majestic palm trees. On the way back, it is advisable to stop by the Punta Balandra observatory for a chance to see whales from land.

And, of course, admire the colorful parades during the carnival from February to the first week of March!

Have a nice trip !
