For any destination seeking to become a tourist center of international reference, it is a great success to have the backing of prestigious hotel brands, as is the case in Santo Domingo, however the Dominican capital has a great challenge to overcome: the same “cake” is shared with more hotels.
This was the opinion of Iván Cunillera, general manager of the Catalonia Santo Domingo hotel, in an interview with arecoa.com, who indicated that “personally I am concerned that more hotels are opening when we are not attracting more tourism”.
“Santo Domingo needs to sell itself better to achieve a better international projection, in addition to boosting tourism for events and conventions,” he added.
The executive said that beach hotels are doing very well, “everything is joy”, but not so in Santo Domingo. “We still have the same cake to share with more hotels,” he emphasized.
In order for more tourists to come to the city, Cunillera said that the Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo (AHSD) is in constant meetings, with the support of Mitur, in search of solutions that serve to promote and attract overnight stays in the city, as well as visitors for cultural tourism and shopping. In addition, he sees the need for the construction and implementation of the Convention Center.
