The Ruins of La Isabela

Christopher Columbus established the first European colony in the New World on a bank of the Bajabonico River, along with the approximately 1,500 Spaniards, mostly aristocrats, who accompanied him on his second voyage. These ruins are still standing in this bay. Historical documents show that the first Catholic mass was celebrated here and a modern church was inaugurated in 1993, on the 500th anniversary of that first mass.
