The Sur Futuro Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture signed an extension of their agreement for the production of coconut, coffee, mango, lemon and avocado plants, which are delivered to small farmers nationwide for sustainable development projects in the most vulnerable communities of the country.
As well as the delivery of coconut plants by President Luis Abinader to producers in the eastern region affected by storm Fiona, and to coffee producers in Polo, Barahona, as part of the National Plan for the relaunching of coffee cultivation.
To date, Sur Futuro has produced more than 1,600,000,000 plants as part of this alliance.
Likewise, the Ministry of Agriculture and Sur Futuro share the vision of promoting coconut as the crop of the future.
The president of the Sur Futuro Foundation, Melba Segura de Grullón, said, “I am very pleased to be achieving the dream of introducing coconut cultivation in the southern region, as was done with avocado cultivation under drip irrigation and greenhouse production”.
Segura de Grullón added: “Replacing production practices based on slash-and-burn agriculture with the development of regenerative agriculture projects that are resistant to the effects of climate change, which have a greater impact on those who have the least”.
In turn, the Minister of Agriculture Limbert Cruz valued the joint effort with Sur Futuro to ensure increased agricultural production and productivity thereby improving living conditions, food security and the development of the rural population nationwide.
