Independence Park
Located in the western end of the colonial city and in front of the beginning of El Conde Street, the Independence Park is one of the most sacred places in the Dominican Republic.

Inside the walled and guarded enclosure is the Altar de la Patria, a white marble mausoleum.

This also houses the remains of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic: Juan Pablo Duarte, Matías Ramón Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez.

Pay your respects at the foot of their life-size statues, then stroll through the park’s vast grounds.

They also often serve as an open art gallery with frequent exhibits both inside and around its walls, where there is always a national guard.
