Government assures that current number of formal jobs exceeds pre-COVID-19 figure

President Luis Abinader informed today that the Dominican Republic surpassed, as of September 2021, the number of pre-covid-19 formal jobs with one million 526 thousand 630 positions against one million 518 thousand 312 as of February 2020, according to data offered by the Social Security Treasury.

The news was shared by the Minister of Labor, Luis Miguel De Camps, through his Twitter account and celebrated by the president, because, he said, it corresponds to one of the main objectives set by the government.

Abinader ratified the government’s commitment to the generation of jobs and support for companies in projects that ensure jobs for Dominicans.

“Today I want to support this expansion project and any other project (of expansion) of this company and of any company, which means creating jobs in a society where it is needed, we will support it, and the government is there to be that strategic partner in the development of the country,” said the president.

Luis Abinader spoke while participating in the inauguration of the new industrial building of the company Gerdau Metaldom and its new administrative offices, of 12,500 square meters, which consolidated all the operations of the company in the Duarte Industrial Park with an investment of more than 900 million pesos.

He congratulated Metaldom for the expansion which, according to him, not only serves the Dominican market, but also exports to the Caribbean and Central America.

President Abinader lit the new industrial building together with the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó; the general director of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón and the executive president of Gerdau Metaldom, Jefferson Marko.

This ship has a new pipe line with an installed capacity of 60 thousand tons per year and a longitudinal coil slitting line with a capacity that can reach 72 thousand tons of slit strips.

During the ceremony, Minister Bisonó highlighted the conditions offered by President Abinader for the reactivation of the Dominican economy in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic.

He said that because of the climate of confidence expressed by the president, new investments have arrived in the country, which is supported by a business climate.

He added that Gerdau Metaldom is an irrefutable example of the alliance between the government and the productive sector.

Meanwhile, the executive president of Gerdau Metaldom said that today, he shared with those present the culmination of efforts and investments that have been made during the last two years, so that Dominicans can say that they have in their country the most productive steel company in the region.

Marko took the opportunity to guarantee that Gerdau Metaldom has the capacity to supply 100% of the Dominican market and also to export to more than 30 destinations in the Caribbean islands and Central America, for which he thanked President Abinader for the support that he is giving to the national industries.

“Today Gerdau Metaldom has the capacity to supply not only the entire Dominican market, but also to export our products to the Caribbean islands and Central America. And your presence here, Mr. President, reaffirms the commitment of the State to support the national industry, to support exports and to support the generation of quality jobs in the Dominican Republic,” he added.

The steel company currently provides direct employment to more than 800 people and indirectly to more than 2,200. Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, they managed to maintain 100% of these jobs and end the year 2020 with more than 600 thousand tons of steel in local and international markets.
