More than half a million electronic devices (tablets) were received by President Luis Abinader this Monday, which will be delivered to students of public elementary schools.
The president said that with this delivery the government reaffirms its political will to close the digital divide, one of the most important goals of his administration and thereby ensures that the benefits of technology reach all people, leaving no one behind.
The 537,432 tablets were acquired through the global procurement mechanism of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with an investment of RD $ 5,559,522,338.
Today we receive and deliver 537,432 tablets. Which represents 67% of the total committed, which is 800,000 tablets.
At this point I want to thank the work of UNDP and the Ministry of Education for working side by side and achieving this difficult goal, “said the president.
He explained that the centralized purchase through the United Nations purchasing center allowed a saving of 18 million dollars to the coffers of the Dominican State.
The Minister of Education, Roberto Fulcar, said that “the 537,432 tablets that we receive today, out of a total of 800 thousand devices that have been acquired for primary education, added to a total of 121 thousand that have already been distributed in the Regional Education # 8 based in Santiago de los Caballeros, we would be managing to deliver a device per student to 34% of the remaining, in just 7 months of government management. The investment of the devices that we receive today are part of the 800,000 devices, which they reach an investment of RD $ 8,282,618,895.12 “.
For the delivery of electronic devices, the schools of the 48 municipalities that began face-to-face teaching will be prioritized and then they will be distributed in the other centers.
The tablets remain in the warehouse of the Ministry of Education in Haina where a symbolic delivery was made to primary level students.
