Tourism Minister David Collado announced on Wednesday that President Luis Abinader will build Santo Domingo’s first Convention Center on the land where the former Hispaniola hotel is located.
Speaking during the inauguration of the new Latitud 18 project and the Santo Domingo Marriot Piantiti and Aloft Santo Domingo Piantini hotels, which was attended by President Abinader, Collado added that these lands were declared of public utility and confirmed that they are already in negotiations for the construction to be carried out with the advice of Ifema, responsible for the Fitur fair.
By means of Decree 296-22, the Government declared “of public utility and social interest the acquisition, by the Dominican State, of the portions of land where the Hispaniola hotel is located to be used in the construction of the Santo Domingo Convention Center”.
The executive order established that the 30 lots be purchased with funds coming from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) and declared as a matter of urgency that “the Dominican State enters into possession of the indicated real estate, so that the construction of the Santo Domingo Convention Center can begin immediately”.
The Minister of Tourism also informed that, in the coming months, President Abinader will give the first kick for the construction of a boulevard that will significantly transform the city, extending from Winston Churchill Avenue to Abraham Lincoln Avenue and with an investment of RD 500 million.
Collado added that this work is expected to begin in 20 to 30 days, marking a clear sign of the vision of urban development and tourism for Santo Domingo. “Our country is at the moment of developing tourism and receiving investments.”
Likewise, Collado expressed his gratitude to RCD Hotels CEO Roberto Chapur for his confidence in the government and his determination in investing in the country and highlighted the importance of the faith placed in the Dominican Republic’s tourism cabinet, led by President Luis Abinader, especially in taking the first bite in October 2020, in the midst of uncertainty and fear.
“Being here today demonstrates their determination and belief in the government of President Luis Abinader and in the work we are doing with great seriousness and commitment to the evolution and development of tourism,” Collado said.
Significant growth in the Dominican Republic
Meanwhile, the executive director of RCD Hotels, Roberto Chapur, affirmed that the Dominican Republic has a good government, political stability, very friendly people and great professionals and is experiencing significant growth, motivated by several factors that make investment attractive.
Chapur stressed that these conditions have generated a positive perception among investors. “All these factors made us decide to invest in a business that is our first expertism”.
The representative of Marriott International in the Dominican Republic, Yudith García, said that both brands combine a distinctive service with a comfortable design, allowing them to meet the needs of each guest arriving on the island.
The new hotel offer will strengthen executive tourism in the country and will generate more than 300 new jobs with a project that has 400 rooms and is characterized by the high level of hospitality and gastronomy, through its restaurants, among them: Cueva Siete, with contemporary Mexican food, and Makoto, an internationally recognized brand of modern Japanese food.
These new hotels reinforce the company’s commitment to strategic expansion in high-growth markets and continue to strengthen local and international tourism.
President Abinader was accompanied by the directors of Public-Private Alliances, Sigmund Freund, and of ProDominicana, Biviana Riveiro; the general administrator of Banco de Reservas, Samuel Pereyra; the president of the DNCD, Vice Admiral José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa; businessmen, among others.
