Advances in the DR in terms of access to justice highlighted

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued its annual report for the year 2023, in which it highlights as a positive point the progress made by the Dominican Republic in terms of access to justice, with the elimination of judicial delay in the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ).

The report highlights that, until August 2023, the Second and Third Chambers of the SCJ eliminated the judicial delay on the files processed under the law on cassation procedure, while highlighting the work for the First Chamber to reduce the judicial delay by the end of last year.

An important element highlighted in the annual report of the IACHR is that, by the end of the year 2022, the SCJ reduced by 81% the number of cases pending resolution.

Likewise, another relevant aspect that the report highlights regarding the Judicial Branch of the Dominican Republic is the extension of the Case Management System (SGC) to the criminal jurisdiction, in order to facilitate the follow-up and monitoring of the courts’ activities.

In addition, the publication of the Guide to Communication with a Gender Perspective, to promote inclusive language in judges, judges, and judicial servants, is favorable.

About the Report

The IACHR publishes its annual report in compliance with Article 59 of its Rules of Procedure, which compiles the work carried out comprehensively through its mechanisms and the most relevant results achieved by this main body of the Organization of American States (OAS). The OAS currently has 34 member states, including the Dominican Republic.

In its annual report, the IACHR highlights a series of measures, policies, practices and programs adopted by States in the Americas as examples of good practices that comply with Inter-American human rights standards.

The IACHR is one of two organs of the Inter-American system responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights; the other is the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, based in San José, Costa Rica.
