COE places nine provinces on green alert due to tropical cyclone

The Directorate of the Emergency Operations Center (COE) reports that according to today’s weather bulletin from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), which states that at 5:00 p.m. the potential tropical cyclone No.5 of this 2024 hurricane season became tropical storm Ernesto. Located approximately 475 kilometers east/southeast of Antigua, it has maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and is moving rapidly west/northwest at 44 kph.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the effects of tropical storm Ernesto will cause, from early morning hours, moderate to very heavy downpours at times with thundershowers and wind gusts, over sectors of the north, northeast, the eastern plains, the Central Mountain Range and the Caribbean coast. These conditions will gradually extend to other locations of the national territory during the course of the day. Dangerous swell will remain towards the northeastern and eastern Atlantic coast.

In virtue of the above and the provisions of Article 2, Chapter 1 of Law 147-02, on Risk Management, the Emergency Operations Center (COE), issues a green alert for possible flooding of rivers, streams and creeks, as well as flash or urban flooding, for the following provinces:

Green alert: A green alert is declared when the expectations of a phenomenon allow foreseeing the occurrence of an event of a dangerous nature for the population. It can be partial or total.
