Construction of the Puerto Plata Market begins

The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, led the first inauguration of the Mercado San Felipe, in Puerto Plata, a project that will have a private investment of more than 1 billion pesos from the Dominican Tourism Entertainment Trust, which will promote tourism and offer new entertainment options in the Cibao area.

Mercado San Felipe is strategically located in the center of the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata and, in its 6,206 square meters of construction, will house nine attractions and multi-sensory immersion experiences, through which local and foreign visitors will delve into the history, gastronomy, sports and culture of the Dominican people.

“Mercado San Felipe was born with the objective of spreading and promoting the cultural roots of the Dominican Republic. It is a place where tourists will be able to enjoy and learn about food, art, sports and the best of the Dominican Republic,” said Guillermo Pérez, co-owner and founder of Mercado San Felipe.

The construction of the project will be completed by the winter of 2023, and will generate around 300 direct and indirect jobs.

World-class tourism experiences

The experiences that will be lived in Mercado San Felipe will be accompanied by the main brands of products that, over the years, have become a country brand, such as Café Santo Domingo, in the coffee experience; Kah Kow, in the cocoa experience; Típico Bonao in gastronomy; and 4D Colonial Gate in 4D cinema. Other major rum, tobacco and entertainment brands will soon join the project to complete the nine experiences that also include amber and larimar, baseball, carnival and music. In addition, a bazaar area will be a showcase for Dominican-made products.

The San Felipe Market will have at its heart a central atrium that will serve as a center for cultural, artistic, sports and culinary activities. All areas will meet the highest demands of global, inclusive and sustainable tourism, such as access ramps, elevators and toilets, service areas and waste management. All designed to withstand peaks of visits from local and foreign tourists.

The San Felipe Market will be added to the tourist offer of Puerto Plata and will coexist with the best known places in the area such as the San Felipe Fortress, the General Gregorio Luperón House Museum, the Amber Gallery, the Taino Art Museum and the San Felipe Apostle Cathedral.

Also participating in the activity were the Minister of Tourism, David Collado; the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza; the Senator of Puerto Plata, Ginnette Bournigal; the Governor of Puerto Plata, Claritza Rochtte; and the Syndic of Puerto Plata, Rogelio García.
