Dominican Republic will build nurseries for young children

A program called “Quisqueya starts with you”

President Danilo Medina has announced a program called “Quisqueya starts with you” which involves building 100 nurseries (early childhood education centers) around the country at a cost of RD$43.7 million. The program is for children under the age of five. The plan is to build and equip 216 centers between now and 2016, bringing the total to 330, including the 14 that exist at present.

He said that this would enable more than 90,000 children under the age of five to receive the benefits of early education. Decree 102-13 establishes that it is in the national interest to protect and nurture all Dominican children from the ages of 0 to 5.

The President made the announcement at the Presidential Palace yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 16 April. Vice President Margarita Cedeno, the First Lady Candida Montilla, as well as Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo, Administrative Minister Jose Ramon Peralta, Minister of Education Josefina Pimentel, Minister of Public Health Freddy Hidalgo and UNICEF representative in the country Maria Jesus Conde were present at the ceremony.
