President Luis Abinader today launched a new dynamic of citizen participation, called #LAencuesta, through his WhatsApp channel. This initiative seeks to foster greater direct interaction with the citizenry, allowing Dominicans to express their opinion on crucial issues for the future of the country through simple Yes or No, or multiple choice polls.
The first questions of #LAencuesta address significant and highly relevant proposals for the country, such as the unification of presidential, congressional and municipal elections as of 2032, the reduction of the number of deputies in the National Congress, the unmodifiability of presidential term limits and the guarantee of an independent and non-partisan Public Ministry. These questions have been strategically distributed to capture the population’s feelings on these fundamental issues.
Homero Figueroa, director of Strategy and Communication of the Presidency (Diecom), commented, “As a candidate and as president, Luis Abinader has put special interest in knowing the opinion and feelings of Dominicans on all issues, and #LAencuesta seeks – justly – that everyone can give their opinion on the most relevant issues of the country, and what better than on the most used platform in the Dominican Republic, WhatsApp.”
President Abinader will present the results of these polls at his weekly press conference, #LAsemanal, where he will analyze the responses and discuss next steps based on citizen feedback. With this new participation tool, the president reaffirms his commitment to a transparent, open and close management to the people, strengthening democracy and ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and considered in governmental decision making.
