Englishman Matt Wallace won his first victory on the PGA Tour after triumphing in the sixth edition of the Corales Puntacana Championship that ended this Sunday, an event that registered the largest attendance in its history. With his victory, Matt earns 300 points for the FedEx Cup and a cash prize of US$684,000.00 of the US$3.8 million dollars of the total purse of the event.
“I’m very excited about this win. I thank the fans, all the staff that worked on the tournament, Don Frank, Frank Elias, and the entire Rainieri family. This will be a week I will never forget,” said the champion Wallace during the awards ceremony.
In addition to Wallace, Mr. Frank Elias Rainieri, President and CEO of the Puntacana Group, also expressed some emotional words during the awards ceremony. “This is a tournament for all of you. I thank all the staff of our company, the volunteers, the PGA Tour, and you, the fans who have come to celebrate with us this great event. Matt, many congratulations,” said the executive.
Mr. Frank Rainieri, Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Puntacana Group, and Francesca Rainieri, CFO of the Puntacana Group, presented the official tournament memorabilia, consisting of the champion’s traditional white chacabana and the Puntacana Resort and Club hat. Frank Elias Rainieri formally presented the trophy.
The tournament was one of the most competitive in the six-year history of the event. En route to the second round, and with only five holes to go, five players had the opportunity to climb to the top of the leaderboard. The drama went all the way to the 18th hole, as Nicolai Høgaard, who had birdied the 17th, had a chance to tie the score, but a par on the final hole put him alone in second place (US$414,200.00). Tyler Duncan and Sam Stevens tied for third place.
The public enjoyed a varied entertainment menu in the A&B area, with live music, dancing, golf simulators and a performance by the great artist, Manny Cruz, who received a standing ovation from the audience.
