With the purpose of continuing to contribute to the progressive flourishing of the southern region, so that it may have better socioeconomic, environmental, maritime and tourist conditions, the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, inaugurated several works in the area and verified first hand the progress of the Cabo Rojo Tourist Development Project.
The vice president’s agenda began in Pedernales, with the delivery of a fishermen’s pier for the province, which will benefit dozens of Dominicans who work day after day at sea to provide for their families.
In the same way, he also delivered, in Baní, the fishermen’s pier of Salinas, for an amount of RD 22,156,735.47.
During these two acts, accompanied by the executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), Jean Luis Rodríguez, the vice-president said that these new fishing piers represent an important step to honor the effort and dedication of each local worker and revitalize fishing activity throughout the region.
In this sense, Raquel Peña pledged to push from the vice presidency the expansion and modernization of the sector which, she considered, had been forgotten.
“We are on an island; we are going to take advantage of that and we are going to develop the Dominican Republic’s fishing industry. Count on us!” she emphasized.
The deputy president added that each work built in this region is intended so that everyone can benefit from the development and modernization that the government is promoting in this area of the country.
“We are advancing in our mission to build a more promising future for the Southern region, based on infrastructure development and tangible support for our people,” she added.
On his side, the director of Apordom highlighted the importance of these works that are changing the lives of thousands of fishermen nationwide.
“This space is a symbol of hope and progress for this hard-working fishing community of Pedernales. We remain focused on dignifying the lives of our fishermen and their families, offering them the opportunity to live from their trade in a safer way, and with guarantees of growth as has been the vision of our President Luis Abinader,” said Jean Luis Rodriguez.
The official said that this project “is a new chapter that marks the beginning of a safer, more active and productive fishing and, moreover, a dream come true for the fishermen of Pedernales, and seeks to enhance the activity of this important sector”.
The construction of the fishing pier in Cabo Rojo consists of two breakwaters with a total area of 395 m² and has capacity for 10 larger vessels and 44 smaller vessels simultaneously. In addition, it has a metallic superstructure, among other specifications that add up to an investment of RD 35,935,518.78.
Meanwhile, the construction of the fishing pier in Salinas consists of two breakwaters and three gangways with a total area of 185.20 m². It also has a capacity for five vessels of greater draft and 22 vessels of lesser draft, simultaneously.
Both works are part of the “National Plan for the Construction and Rehabilitation of Fishing Docks”.
Tour in Cabo Rojo
During this Saturday’s tour, the vice-president was accompanied by Altagracia Brea, governor of the province of Pedernales; Sigmund Freund, minister of Public Administration and honorary executive director of the Trust for the Tourist Development of Pedernales; Jean Luis Rodríguez, head of Apordom; Alejandro Campos, president of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Port Authority; Mauricio Hamui, executive director of ITM Group, and other personalities. With them, Raquel Peña toured the Cabo Rojo Tourism Development Project and visited the area where the first hotels of the project are being built.
The tour included a visit to the cruise port and other areas where she was able to see the improvements of the first phase and the progress of the second phase, developed by the Mexican multinational.
The vice-president said that President Abinader “opened the doors for a beautiful land like Pedernales”, which is now being exploited, but in a responsible way and for the benefit of its citizens.
The head of Apordom revealed that by the end of this year they expect to conclude the next phase and that, according to projections, they will close the year with the arrival of 20,000 passengers and in 2025 they expect to receive 150,000.
As part of the visit, the Vice-Minister visited the model room of the Iberostar, the first hotel to open its doors in Cabo Rojo.
This is a Family Plus Slow Standard room, with an area of 77 m². It features state-of-the-art technology to enhance the guest experience, including automation systems for lighting and climate control, as well as advanced connectivity services.
This hotel will be the first to partially begin operations at the end of this year and is designed under the principles of sustainability, modernity and integration with nature.
The Cabo Rojo tourism development project in Pedernales is the biggest bet made by the Dominican Government, headed by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, to boost the economic growth of the Southern region, under a concept of environmental and social sustainability.
