The Dominican Republic Is a Member Of The United Nations Economic Council

It demonstrates the leading role the country

The Dominican Republic was elected as a member of the United Nations Economic Council yesterday. The decision was taken after a unanimous vote by 188 countries in the General Assembly.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, this vote is a demonstration of the leading role the country has taken on economic issues on the international scene.

This election was made possible by the generous gesture made by Colombia that ceded its turn in exchange for its entry in 2013 which was originally going to be used by the Dominican Republic, says Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, as quoted in the press release.

The note says this position will give the Dominican Republic and President Leonel Fernández a strong platform to continue its policy of speaking out on financial speculation with oil and commodity prices on the international markets.
