U.S. and DR sign historic open skies agreement

President Luis Abinader signed at noon this Friday an Open Skies Agreement between the Dominican Republic and the United States that will reduce the cost of airline tickets paid by travelers between the two countries.

Through the agreement, signed by the U.S. Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, José W. Fernández, the Dominican government will promote the liberalization of air routes, fostering competition and facilitating access to Dominican territory from various parts of the world, according to Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez.

“The new instrument allows the airlines of both states to offer more affordable and efficient services, as well as stimulating trade to and from the country,” he said.

The Chancellor affirmed that the doors are open for an attractive scenario for our airlines and for Dominicans and foreigners who will use them, which would increase competitiveness with better fares and from more destinations, according to Diario Libre.

The agreement was the product of an arduous negotiation process headed, on the Dominican Republic side, by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, together with a team that included the executive director of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC), Héctor Porcella.

Collado revealed that in the talks, “Dominican airlines with majority foreign capital will also be considered to fly to the United States”. This will allow airlines such as Arajet to operate flights to the United States.
