UN President to visit Dominican Republic

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex) informed that the president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Abdullah Shahid, will arrive in the Dominican Republic this Thursday, June 16, on an official visit that will last until Sunday, June 19, in order to complete an important work agenda with high-ranking Dominican government officials and civil society organizations.

The president of the main deliberative body of the United Nations (UN) will be received on Friday 17 by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, at the National Palace, where they will discuss the country’s progress in the economic recovery and tourism development it has experienced, after the pandemic of COVID-19. This meeting continues to strengthen our regional and multilateral leadership, which represents a fundamental purpose of Dominican foreign policy.

On the same day, Shahid will receive an award from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Alvarez, at the headquarters of the Dominican Foreign Ministry, prior to a working lunch in which they will address issues of sustainability and environment.

The agenda of the also Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives includes a visit to the facilities of the Supérate Program, to learn about the different projects promoted by the Dominican State in favor of the most vulnerable; a conversation with the civil society, organized by the United Nations country team, and his participation in a dinner with young parliamentarians, offered by the Dominican ambassador to the UN, José Blanco.

On Saturday 18, Shahid will travel to the city of La Romana, where he will visit the Hogar del Niño, followed by a tour of Casa de Campo Resort and Altos de Chavón. He will conclude his agenda with a visit to the Puntacana Group Foundation, before returning to New York City on Sunday, the 19th.
