Inauguration of garden at Embassy RD, Mexico

In a solemn act, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United Mexican States inaugurated yesterday the Dominican Republic Garden and the Monument to Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez, founder of the Dominican Republic, on Explanada Avenue and Mount Everest in Lomas de Chapultepec, Mexico City.

The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, the Government of Mexico City and the Mayor’s Office Miguel Hidalgo of that city, as well as Mr. Héctor José Rizek Sued, President of Grupo Rizek, Mrs. Ana Corripio, Director of Fundación Corripio, Mrs. Linda Valette, representing Banreservas, Mr. Ramón Velázquez Cabrera, representative of Cav Diseño e Ingeniería, institutions that sponsored the monument.

After honoring the flags and singing both hymns, Ambassador María Isabel Castillo Báez recalled that 52 years ago the government of Mexico donated a statue of Benito Juárez to the Dominican Republic and expressed that “it is an enormous privilege to relocate and offer to Mexico, in reciprocity and on behalf of the people and government of the Dominican Republic, the bust of Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez, Father of the Dominican Homeland, under whose symbolic light we are standing today and on whose ideals of democracy, justice and freedom the Dominican nation was founded and transcends”.

He also thanked the Mexican authorities for the nomenclature of the Dominican Republic Garden and for the generous expression of friendship by allowing the bust of the most exalted figure of Dominican history to be erected in that space.

Each one of you embodies many of the values enshrined by our hero in his ideology: the value of patriotism, the value of working for the country, the value of friendship and the value of good example”.

For his part, Mr. Imanol Belausteguigoitia Reyes, Director General for Central America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of H.E. Mrs. Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, expressed “that the monument to Juan Pablo Duarte in Mexico City is a permanent reminder of the values of freedom, justice and patriotism that Duarte embodied and that will inspire future generations to continue working for the well-being and development of their countries”.

Likewise, he reiterated the congratulations “of the government of Mexico for the exemplary civic, democratic and peaceful electoral day that took place in the Dominican Republic last May 19, in which President Luis Abinader was reelected for a second term 2024 – 2028”.

The ribbon was then cut to officially inaugurate the garden and the monument, the work of one of the great masters of contemporary Mexican architecture, architect Humberto Artigas.

The ceremony ended with a floral offering in front of the bust of the Dominican hero.
