Tobacco exports in the DR: US$417.7M Jan-Apr

Rum sales abroad totaled US$36.9 million in the first four months of 2024

Exports of tobacco and tobacco substitutes totaled US$417.7 million in the first four months of 2024, equivalent to a year-on-year growth of 9.7%, informed Biviana Riveiro, executive director of the Dominican Republic Export and Investment Center (ProDominicana).

During the third edition of “Tobacco and Rum Night”, Riveiro highlighted that for the period 2020-2023, the accumulated exports of the tobacco and rum sector reached US$5,072.4 million for a growth of 35.5% with respect to the similar pre-pandemic period 2016-2019.

The head of ProDominicana assured that these figures are the result of the implementation of the National Plan for the Promotion of Exports (PNFE) 2020-2030.

Among the main destinations for Dominican tobacco and tobacco substitutes exports in 2023 are the United States with 79.57%, Germany (4.80%), Belgium (1.79%), Puerto Rico (1.63%), and Honduras (1.25%). In turn, Santiago is positioned as the main tobacco and tobacco substitutes exporting province, accounting for 74.41% of total exports, followed by La Romana with 12.19% and San Pedro de Macoris with 3.34%, according to ProDominicana.

As for rum exports, Riveiro said that they reached US$36.9 million in the January-April period, with the National District standing out as the main exporter of rum, which also contributed 61.98% of total exports. This was followed by San Pedro de Macorís with 28.43%, Santo Domingo (3.31%), Monte Plata (3.10%) and Santiago (2.86%).

The main destinations for Dominican rum exports in 2023 were Spain with 41.83%, the United States with 16.07%, Latvia 9.77%, the Netherlands 4.38%, Chile 2.74%, and Germany 2.66%, among others.
