SDSS financial stability highlighted

The Treasurer of Social Security, Henry Sahdalá, participated as a speaker at the II Biennial Congress on Health and Social Security, organized by the Ombudsman’s office. During his speech, he highlighted the historical figure of RD 1.6 billion in collections in the more than two decades of operation of the Dominican Social Security System.

Of this amount, RD 745,732 million have been destined to the Family Health Insurance (SFS); RD 786,262 million to the Old Age, Disability and Survivorship Insurance (pensions), and RD 77,641 million to the Labor Risks Insurance.

According to the data provided by Sahdalá, the subsidized regime of the Family Health Insurance has a total of 5,773,925 affiliates, while the contributory regime has 4,704,070 affiliates. Together, both regimes provide health coverage to a total of 10.5 million citizens, which represents approximately 98% of the Dominican population, the highest percentage in the entire region.

“This figure is a sign that our Dominican Social Security System has reached important levels of maturity,” the treasurer indicated.

Modification of Law 87-01

During his presentation, Henry Sahdalá also addressed the possible modification to Law 87-01, which creates the Dominican Social Security System. He cited the figures that the Ministry of Public Health will allocate this year to health expenses and those that will be contributed by social security.

“The Ministry of Public Health reports that it will allocate important resources this year for the health care of citizens. In addition, the social security will contribute RD 100 billion. These amounts can help reduce much of the existing deficiencies and improve the complaints that many affiliates have about the health system for different causes,” said Sahdalá.

Regarding his perspective on a possible modification to Law 87-01, Sahdalá pointed out that “a good part of the necessary changes can be made without modifying the law. All we need is willingness, sincerity, putting aside particular interests and thinking of the citizens affiliated to the System. Let’s put aside sectorial attitudes and, after we achieve that, then let’s go to the Congress of the Republic.”
