The role of the cooperative movement in the Dominican economy highlighted

The Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, headed the third delivery of certificates of incorporation of the Instituto de Desarrollo y Crédito Cooperativo (Idecoop), an event in which the institution also presented its main achievements.

Peña emphasized that cooperativism not only boosts local economic development, but also promotes equity and the economic empowerment of men and women in the communities.

He also emphasized the relevance of these platforms in areas such as job creation and entrepreneurship, in addition to encouraging savings habits, which is why the government, through Idecoop, has implemented policies that support the creation of new cooperatives, and strengthen existing ones, providing them with the necessary tools to grow and prosper.

Franco De los Santos, president administrator of Idecoop, celebrated this important advance for the sector, something that reflects the dynamism and strength of the cooperative movement in the nation. “Each of these entities represents a firm step towards the creation of employment, the boosting of the local economy, and the promotion of solidarity among its members,” said De los Santos.

Likewise, he highlighted the continued commitment of the entity he directs, with the promotion of cooperative initiatives that promote collaboration, inclusion and sustainable economic development. “Today we recognize the effort and dedication of these new cooperatives, which not only represent an advance in the sector, but also a firm step towards a more equitable and solidary economy,” he added.

Lisette Jiménez, Deputy Director General, highlighted the important advances made by Idecoop in the last four years, in comparison with previous periods. She said that a large part of its actions have been carried out under a technical and ethical approach where, in addition, innovative strategies have been implemented to promote better practices in cooperatives.

He stressed that “since we took over the management of this institution headed by Franco De los Santos, we did not see the obstacles but the opportunities we had to improve, and together with a team of capable and committed professionals we have promoted the strengthening of the institution, financial inclusion and the implementation of control mechanisms in order to mitigate risks and increase confidence in this genuine economic model”.

The new cooperatives cover a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, commerce, services and industry. This diversity not only enriches economic opportunities in the country, but also strengthens a network of mutual support among entrepreneurs and local communities.

The entities recognized today stand out for their innovative proposals in areas such as production, savings and credit, and agriculture, demonstrating a remarkable potential to contribute positively to their communities and the economic environment.

Idecoop has provided technical, financial and educational support to ensure that these cooperatives start their operations on a solid foundation.

The ceremony was also attended by Idecoop officials, sister cooperatives, partners and special guests, who shared experiences on the positive impact of cooperatives on local development.
