Icelandic airline requests permits for 276 flights from the U.S. to the Caribbean and South America

Icelandic airline Icelandair has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for permits to operate a total of 276 charter flights to destinations in the Caribbean and South America.

Specifically, Icelandair’s plan is to fly, in conjunction with the travel agency Anmart Superior Travel, from the states of Florida and Texas to Cuba, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.

According to the request, to which Aviation Online has had access, these flights would be operated from February 1 to May 31, 2022. The frequencies included in Icelandair’s document are as follows:

Orlando (Florida) – Havana (Cuba): 17 weekly flights.
Houston (Texas) – Havana (Cuba): 17 weekly flights.
Miami (Florida) – Havana (Cuba): 136 weekly flights.
Miami (Florida) – Quito (Ecuador): 34 weekly flights.
Miami (Florida) – Guayaquil (Ecuador): 34 weekly flights.
Miami (Florida) – Punta Cana (Dominican Republic): 34 weekly flights.

If the permits are granted, the flights will be operated by Boeing 757 or 737 MAX aircraft.

However, several U.S. airlines have filed complaints with the DOT. According to these airlines, domestic airlines should have priority in operating these flights.
