ADTS unveils the great contributions of medical tourism in the DR

Health tourism has become an “extremely important” sector of the Dominican Republic’s economy due to the generation of resources, job creation and the transfer of technology it provides.

This was stated by Alejandro Cambiaso, president of the Dominican Association of Health Tourism (ADTS), who emphasized that the industry will increasingly increase the arrival of tourists seeking health services in the Dominican Republic, due to the fact that, in the world, this industry moves more than 100 billion dollars and 2.5% of the airline tickets.

He highlighted that the Dominican Republic is the leader in medical tourism in the Caribbean, number two in Latin America and ranks 19th in the world, according to data from the Medical Tourism Index.

He said that the main centers to offer health services to tourists are located in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, La Romana and Puerto Plata.

He also detailed that most of the patients who traveled to the country in search of health services were Dominicans residing abroad and coming from the Caribbean Islands, the United States, Canada and Spain.

Cambiaso also explained that of the tourists who came to the country in 2022, 338,747 corresponded to health patients, of which 292,902 were for medical tourism and 75,845 for tourism medicine.
