First Lady Raquel Arbaje delivered 42 cochlear devices to the National Health Service (SNS) to begin the third day of cochlear implants for children with hearing loss.
This initiative of the “Uniting Wills” program of the Office of the First Lady is supported by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the National Health Service, as the operating entity.
The acquisition of these devices marks the beginning of the third cycle of operations for the benefit of 60 children with hearing impairment, offering them the opportunity to significantly improve their quality of life.
The First Lady emphasized the importance of this program, highlighting the support of Vice President Raquel Peña in each of the operations. She indicated that this initiative not only restores hearing to the children, but also enhances their integral development. “Each cochlear implant represents a new hope, a new beginning for our children. It is another example that, by joining forces, we can achieve great things for the benefit of our children,” she said.
Mario Lama, executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), highlighted that the program has benefited 43 children with hearing implants, with the goal of reaching 85 children by the beginning of 2025 with the devices received today. He also thanked the commitment of the First Lady Raquel Arbaje, for her collaboration, which has been crucial for the success of these initiatives and to strengthen the link with the community.
Meanwhile, Hostos Rizik, CABEI Director for the Dominican Republic, said: “We are very proud to deliver these cochlear implants that will transform the lives of so many children in the Dominican Republic. This achievement is the result of valuable work in conjunction with the First Lady, Raquel Arbaje, whose commitment to the most vulnerable populations has been fundamental. At CABEI, we reaffirm our commitment to the well-being and development of children, supporting initiatives that generate opportunities for all. Together, we are building an inclusive future full of hope for our new generations.
The acquisition of the cochlear devices was made with a non-refundable contribution of US$1 million from CABEI, with the support of Banreservas Volunteers.
This collaboration reflects the commitment of institutions and sectors that, by joining forces, improve the quality of life of children in vulnerable conditions.
The third day is in addition to the success of the two previous ones during which 43 boys and girls of scarce resources were intervened, who also received treatment and therapies.
