Dozens of low-income people with different health conditions will see their lives changed with the start this weekend of a day of free surgeries (Summer Mission), with local and U.S. doctors, to be held from July 26 to August 2.
The day of general corrective surgeries for conditions such as giant breasts, hernias, burns, gall bladder and lipoma, among others, is the result of an agreement between the Regional Metropolitan Health Service (SRSM) and the IMAHelps Humanitarian Medical Mission of the University of California Irvine, United States, and the intermediation of the assistant attorney general of the Dominican Republic, Roxanna Reyes.
Some 70 volunteers, including Dominican and U.S. doctors from various specialties, as well as other people involved in the coordination and development of the operations, are involved in the operations, to be carried out at the Dr. Mario Tolentino Dipp, Ney Arias Lora and Pearl F. Ort Burn Unit hospitals, located in the Ciudad de la Salud, in Villa Mella, Santo Domingo Norte, in addition to other people involved in the coordination and development of the day. Meanwhile, the patients benefited were selected and pre-evaluated.
At the inauguration of the conferences, prior to the surgeries, led by the director of the SRSM and coordinator of the day, Dr. Edisson Féliz Féliz, he valued how well equipped the centers of the Ciudad Sanitaria Luis E. Aybar are, especially the conditioning in the areas where the residents stay, and urged the participating health professionals to continue learning, specializing and obtaining more tools, in order to offer a much better service to the users, with more humanization.
“Events like this take us to another level. We thank our brothers of IMAHelps, the hospital directors involved, every volunteer and Dominican doctors who have taken part of their time for an altruistic work that will transform the lives of many people who could not afford surgeries, to solve their health problems and make their dreams come true”, said Féliz Féliz.
Meanwhile, the director of the Ciudad Sanitaria, Dr. José Joaquín Puello, in expressing his gratitude, described the date as historic, for the willingness of the international guests to train and contribute their knowledge to the local resident doctors participating in the activity.
Judge Rosanna Reyes, for her part, valued the continuous connection between the Health and Justice sectors, especially in the training and preparation for the resolution of cases, in many of them with forensic medicine.
The IMAHELPS Humanitarian Medical Mission, from the University of California Irvine, is headed by Dr. Cristobal Barrios and Dr. Jeff Crider, president & CEO and vice president of IMAHELPS, respectively, and Jodie Roure, from H Maria, among others.
Conferences (training)
As part of the agreement between these institutions and organizations, a training session for resident doctors was held on Friday, July 26, at an event held at the Ciudad Sanitaria Luis Eduardo Aybar, with the participation of hospital directors from Santo Domingo.
In one of the presentations, the director of the Ciudad Sanitaria, Dr. José Joaquín Puello, with his topic “Unusual headaches”, pointed out that “97% of the world’s population has suffered from headaches at some point in time, and there are more than 500 pathologies that can cause them”.
Among the speakers of the day were Dr. Eddy Bruno, director of the Pearl F. Ort Burn Unit, with a “Historical review of the incidences of burns in the Dominican Republic”; while the internist infectious disease specialist, Elizabeth Sanchez Reyna, dealt with the topic “Anthrax: general perspective and key aspects”.
Likewise, American doctors Khishna Srinidhi, who spoke on Bronchiolitis; Dr. Doriana Castro, who dealt with “Anesthesia”, and Chris Tiner, plastic surgeon, on skin grafts or transplants, captivated with masterful presentations.
