Collado: we are facing the best year for tourism in the DR

In the first four months of 2024, the country received 1,139,381 visitors by sea.

The Minister of Tourism, David Collado, estimates that the Dominican Republic will receive more than 11 million visitors during 2024. In order to make this projection, the official starts from the fact that up to April, 4,178,683 travelers have been received.

While presenting yesterday the most recent statistics of the tourism sector, the official pointed out that, only in April of this year, the country received 704,740 tourists by air, representing a growth of 3% compared to the same month of 2023, 12% compared to 2022 and 20% compared to 2019.

The cruise passengers

Collado explained that in the first four months of 2024, the country received 1,139,381 visitors by sea, representing an increase of 15 % compared to 2023, 173 % compared to 2022 and 234 % compared to 2019.

He specified that during April 248,459 visitors arrived via cruise ships, for a variation of 37 % more than in 2023, 175 % more than in 2022 and 234 % more than in 2019, the latter, a pre-pandemic year.

Dominican ports

Collado detailed that the cruise ports are headed by Taino Bay, noting that for the first time it beat Amber Cove with 447,869 visitors in the first four months of 2024. Amber Cove recorded 417,539 in the same period.

“Approximately 900,000 visitors are arriving to Puerto Plata, which has energized the handicrafts, restaurants, tour operators, and is giving life to this tourist destination. 200,000 arrived through La Romana and 33,000 through Catalina Island, 29,000 through Samaná, 4,000 through Santo Domingo and 4,000 through Cabo Rojo,” explained the Minister of Tourism.

Between cruise passengers and visitors by air, there are 4,178,683 travelers in the first four months of 2024.

“Let it be clear that we are facing the best year of tourism in the Dominican Republic and we are heading to exceed, and I say it today (yesterday) publicly, the 11 million visitors in the year 2024. We grew 12% more than 23 (2023), we grew 52% more than 22 (2022) and, if we compare it with 2019, pre-pandemic, we grew 43%,” expressed the official.
