DR’s commitment to transparency and democracy highlighted

Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez outlined, before the member countries of the Alliance for Economic Prosperity of the Americas (APEP), a series of initiatives developed by the government of President Luis Abinader to strengthen ethics and transparency in the Dominican State and the fight against corruption, as well as to strengthen democracy.

During his participation in the plenary of the APEP Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, led by the Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, Foreign Minister Alvarez made available to the member countries of this space, the model of Integrity and Compliance Commissions implemented by the Dominican Republic, developed by the General Directorate of Ethics and Government Integrity (Digeig), which, he said, has contributed to strengthen the culture of ethics, transparency and accountability in Dominican government institutions.

At this meeting, held in Washington D.C., United States, the Foreign Minister stressed that “transparency is a cross-cutting element for a healthy democracy and the foundation of trust and citizen participation”.

Likewise, Minister Alvarez pointed out the need to carry out a reflection on a possible convergence between APEP and the Summit of the Americas, noting that “next year we will have the APEP Heads of State Summit in Costa Rica and the tenth Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic”.

The Foreign Minister also participated in the “Rule of Law” panel, within the framework of the Public-Private Sector Dialogue convened by the United States Chamber of Commerce, where he highlighted the political and social stability of the Dominican Republic and the solidity of its democracy, as well as the government policies of President Luis Abinader, among them: independent justice, economic growth, public-private alliances, the focus on government ethics and transparency to combat corruption.

The diplomat affirmed that the role of the private sector is vital in supporting APEP countries to fight corruption and strengthen transparency. “I think it is a joint effort. The private sector has its own expertise and its own techniques, and it is important for both to have a continuous dialogue, especially in this era of digitalization. A recent success story was the synergy achieved between both sectors for the interconnection of different institutions, making the Dominican Republic one of the countries accepted by the United States to enter the Global Entry Program,” he added.

He took advantage of these activities to remind those present that in 2025 the tenth Summit of the Americas will be held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, “this is an important scenario that we can take advantage of to show a regional audience that APEP can be a reference capable of delivering the fruits of democracy,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Minister also participated in an Angel Investor Network roundtable, convened by the White House National Security Council, and a reception hosted by the Council of the Americas.

During the course of this agenda, Minister Alvarez was accompanied by MIREX Director of Strategic Studies and Analysis, Anselmo Muñiz; advisor Ariel Gautreaux; and Minister Counselor of the Dominican Embassy in Washington D.C., Aralis Rodriguez.
