The strengthening of the Protection System achieved by the joint work of the Cabinet for Children and Adolescents (GANA) and the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani) has notably improved the capacity of the State to apply and promote the rights of protection, according to three institutions that work with children and adolescents.
In letters sent to First Lady Raquel Arbaje, honorary president of GANA, the organizations Sur Futuro, Plan International Dominican Republic and Unicef coincide in highlighting the performance of the management, technical and operational teams of Conani, which serves as coordinator of the cabinet.
“Conani is a reference in the development of public policies that seek to improve the quality of life of children and adolescents in our country, especially those who are in a state of defenselessness. Its protective role allows the development of activities that promote the restitution of the rights of the child population,” says Melba Segura de Grullón, president of Sur Futuro.
She adds that the joint work of Sur Futuro and Conani in the Southern region in support of the policy of prevention and attention to early unions and teenage pregnancy, has reaped “extraordinary results”, surpassing even the initial goals and demonstrating the effort and commitment of the governing body.
For its part, Plan International Dominican Republic cites among the achievements the professionalization of the management team, which has allowed, among other advances, the reduction of teenage pregnancy thanks to “the remarkable strategic quality with which the efforts have been conducted”.
“Also noticeable is the adequate coordination with other state and civil society institutions, as well as the allocation of resources and supervision to organizations that demonstrate ethical and technical quality,” says Roland Angerer, country director of the international organization.
He emphasizes that, for the first time in many years, the public administration has made a genuine commitment to strengthening Conani, implementing protection programs against all forms of violence affecting the child and adolescent population.
Regarding the strengthening of the Protection System, he emphasizes Conani’s openness to receive and assume recommendations from civil society, which, in his opinion, “has increased the reliability and legitimacy of its administration and has achieved the expansion of its scope throughout the national territory”.
The fluidity of relations with GANA and Conani is highlighted by Unicef, entity for which in recent years there have been “considerable advances” in public policies on children and adolescents.
“Our dialogue with the technical and management team of Conani has been strengthened with a constant dynamic of information exchange, technical dialogue and capacity building, which has allowed us to evolve and strengthen our cooperation, expanding significantly,” adds Anyoli Sanabria, deputy representative and officer in charge of Unicef in the country.
In saluting the achievements of GANA and Conani, Sur Futuro, Plan International Dominican Republic and Unicef express to the First Lady their desire to continue developing joint plans and programs in the immediate future and augur greater success in the continuity of policies and actions that promote the welfare of Dominican children and adolescents.
