Simpson values leadership of businessmen in DR tourism report

The president and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), Julia Simpson, said that the Dominican Republic’s performance in tourism and travel has been “outstanding” in comparison to its peers in the region.

She said that she will soon present a report on the region in Mexico, of which she said that the country (DR) shows outstanding results, which she attributes to the work “hand in hand” developed by the government and the private sector jointly and the leadership of entrepreneurs such as Frank Rainieri.

The president of the WTTC said that many people are seeing the duality of working and being on vacation, and that is a way to encourage more people to come.

He explained the impact of travel tourism to the Dominican Republic’s GDP and highlighted that the development has been incredible, as in 2019 tourism activity represented 15% of GDP, with a contribution of US$17.2 billion and 200,000 jobs and already in 2023 travel and tourism contributed US$18.17 billion to the Caribbean country’s economy.

He said that in 2023 there were 800,000 people working in the sector and it is expected that this year 2024 the contribution to the Dominican economy will reach US$19.4 billion and there will be 842,000 working in the sector.

“For the next 10 years, it is expected that more than one million people will be working in the sector, some 965,000 in particular, and that the contribution to the economy will exceed US$27 billion,” he added.

Simpson explained that during his last visit to Santo Domingo he observed the growth of business and learned that people not only visit the country for the attraction of sun and beach, but also attracted by sports, gastronomy and history, especially the legends about pirates.

He stressed that the Dominican Republic has diversified the nationality of its visitors, according to Listín Diario.

Simpson’s statements about the DR were made during a conference with representatives of the country’s media, through the zoom platform, from London, where he presented the results of the Economic Impact Report 2024, prepared by the international organization and Oxford Economics.
