Best Hotels, the hotel company that manages 38 hotels in Spain, Andorra and the Dominican Republic with more than 12,500 rooms, has implemented the Biosphere Sustainable certificate in all its hotels.
Thus, during 2022, 20 establishments obtained it and, during the first quarter of 2023, the rest of the plant has obtained this distinctive.
In addition, Best Hotels, as a hotel chain, has also obtained the Biosphere Certified distinction.
The Biosphere methodology transfers to tourism the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, approved in the only world summits sponsored by UNESCO and UNWTO, which were held during 2017, the International Year of Sustainable Tourism.
This distinction, awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute, ensures compliance with international sustainability requirements and positions sustainable hotels so that responsible tourists find them first.
It provides knowledge, success stories, advice and a certificate that guarantees that the hotel is an example to follow.
Juan Alcubilla, Corporate General Manager of Best Hotels states that ‘BEST Hotels is a hotel company aware of the impact that our activity generates on society and the environment and, as a leading company, we also assume our social responsibility. Years ago we embarked on a path to renovate our entire hotel plant with the aim of offering a superior vacation experience in our hotels. This strategy is closely linked to responsible business management in all areas: economic, welfare, social and environmental’.
He adds that ‘all our hotels take sustainability as a guiding principle and incorporate new management systems that guarantee a minimum impact on the environment, the promotion of culture and the local economy’.
Reforms for greater sustainability
Over the past few years, BEST Hotels has refurbished more than 8,000 rooms and common facilities in its hotels.
In all these renovations, environmental sustainability improvements have been implemented, such as, for example, the installation of photovoltaic solar energy on hotel roofs to reduce the carbon footprint.
Water use has also been optimized with the installation of mechanisms to reduce the flow rate of faucets and the renovation of pool and irrigation machinery to reduce water loss.
Likewise, the ‘plastic free’ policy has been implemented with the installation of dispensers in the bathrooms instead of the traditional individual amenities or the elimination of plastic cups in the buffets and bars.
BEST Hotels has also implemented technological control mechanisms that make it possible to detect possible energy misuse or water leaks in a very short time, thus ensuring a rapid response to reduce losses as much as possible.
In addition, the new hotels and resorts inaugurated by BEST Hotels in the last five years are already equipped with state-of-the-art machinery and resource reuse, thus achieving establishments with a very low carbon footprint.
