National Library Prize for Children’s Literature to be awarded next Monday

With the presence of the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, the Ministry of Culture and the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library (BNPHU) will present the National Library Award for Children’s Literature for the year 2021.

The award ceremony for Lucía Amelia Cabral Arzeno is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. tomorrow and will take place in the Juan Bosch Hall of the National Library.

The event will also be attended by the Minister of Culture, Carmen Heredia, the director of the BNPHU, Rafael Peralta Romero, public officials, writers, intellectuals and the general public.

Cabral Arzeno was selected as the winner of the first version of the National Library Prize for Children’s Literature by a jury made up of Bruno Rosario Candelier, director of the Dominican Academy of Language; Julio Cuevas, professor of literature at the UASD; Manuel García Arévalo, president of the BNPHU Volunteers, Alicia Baroni, director of the Dominican Republic Children’s and Youth Library, and Rafael Peralta Romero, director of the BNPHU.

The BNPHU emphasized that this award “seeks to recognize the importance of children’s literature as a gateway to the wonderful world of reading, rewarding the literary career of Dominican authors of children’s books”.

Lucía Amelia Cabral Arzeno is a writer, editor, lawyer, cultural animator and children’s storyteller. In her prolific career in the service of Dominican children’s literature, she is a founding member of the Dominican Circle of Writers for Children and Young People, pioneer coordinator of the Children’s Area of the International Book Fair, in its first and subsequent versions.

In the short story genre, she has published the works Hay cuentos que contar; Gabino; Sorprendido, el plátano; El camino de Libertad; Carmelo; Mi abecedario; Dime tú, que digo yo; Soy el río; De cuando nació el niño Dios, Cosquillas en el corazón, and Zumeca.

His short stories have appeared in national and foreign collective editions. In the poetry genre he has published Un puñito tuyo, and in the essay genre, La literatura para niños y jóvenes en la República Dominicana.

He has been a jury member on several occasions in different literary awards for both adults and children. Dozens of works have passed through his hands to be published, while working for Tolle, Lege, Ediciones EDV and especially Ediciones Infantiles Dominicanas. He has been a lecturer both in the country and abroad (University of San Francisco, in California, Buenos Aires, Lisbon, Brussels, among others).
