Government to participate in Regional Congress on Forests and Sustainable Landscapes

The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Orlando Jorge Mera, will head the delegation that will represent the country at the first Regional Congress on Sustainable Forests and Landscapes, to be held April 6-8 in Panama.

The purpose of the event is to discuss, together with his counterparts from Central America, the proposals to be included in the final document to be presented as a region at the XV World Forestry Congress to be held in Korea in May.

The Regional Congress has been organized by the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), the environmental organization of the Central American Integration System (SICA), of which Panama currently holds the pro tempore presidency. The Dominican Republic will assume the presidency of both SICA and CCAD from June 30 to December 31 of this year.

At the congress, Minister Orlando Jorge Mera will participate in one of the panels, as part of the technical unit, along with his other counterparts, where he will talk about the Dominican Republic’s experience in forest management.

In addition to the minister’s presentation, there will be other participations of the delegates to the event, including the presentation from the forestry side, Sol Teresa, Ramón Díaz and Francisca Rosario in relation to the implementation of the REDD+ program. Fernanda de León will also give a virtual talk in a panel called “Gender and Forest”, as well as the Dominican Chamber of Forestry will have a panel on forest management from a private perspective.

This dialogue will include the participation of forestry experts from the entire Central American region and the Dominican Republic. It will be a platform for the countries of the region included in the Central American Integration System (SICA), to share success stories and lessons learned in forestry, as well as to make visible the relationship of rural, Afro-descendant and indigenous communities around forests.

XV World Forestry Congress
The Congress will enable a strong regional position to be found in preparation for the XV World Forestry Congress to be held in Korea from May 2 to 6, 2022. Jair Urriola, CCAD’s executive secretary, highlighted the key role of forests in the context of the Global Forest Goals, the Paris Agreement, the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Agenda.

Prior to the event, the various technical committees of CCAD will meet, formed by the focal points of forests and sustainable landscapes; climate change and risk management; and the convention to combat desertification, there will also be an intersectoral meeting of Ministers of tourism and environment, to approve a joint roadmap. Finally, Minister Mera will participate in the CCAD Council of Ministers where they will address the status of different regional environmental projects and initiatives and will approve regional positions before the World Forestry Congress and the COP 15 of the Desertification Convention.

Likewise, the Ministry’s delegation is made up by: Rosa Otero, Nathalie Flores, Máximo Aquino, Dominga Polanco and José Sergio Abreu. Sol Teresa, Ramón Díaz and Francisca Rosario will also attend the congress.
