9 445 281 persons live in Dominican Republic

50.2% are men 49.8% women

The country’s population has reached 9,445,281 persons, 50.17% are men and 49.83% are women, according to the final official information from the IX National Population and Housing Census of 2010, released yesterday by the National Statistical Office (ONE).

As he presented the data, Temistocles Montas, the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Development, stressed that contrary to what was thought, the men number more than the women, with 4,739,038 men and 4,706,243 women, a difference of 32,795.

Montas also underlined the fact that the census showed a deceleration in population growth, with only an 11.11% in relation to the 2002 census-the last one before that of 2010-at which time the country had 8,562,541 persons.

The largest age group was between 35 and 64 years with 2,709,758 persons, some 28.7%. Then came the children between 0 and 9 years of age which numbered 1,835,166 persons, 19.4%.

The Minister of the Economy said that there was a slight decrease in the number of children, since in 2002 there were 1,945,525.
According to the official information that was collected, in the Dominican Republic there are 2,662,862 housing units and a high concentration of urban residents.
