President Leonel Fernández yesterday inaugurated Dominican Republic’s first Community College, located in Santo Domingo East, which can house 15,000 students.

The State Works Supervisory Office built the facility at a cost of RD$1.8 billion and features 14 buildings with a fire detection system and leading edge technology in each of the areas.

Students entering the educational organization will receive a diploma certifying them as professionals after two years of study, Fernandez said of the Community Technical Institute (ITSC).

He said under the ITSC’s new system students learn by doing, because each area has the necessary equipment to have a relationship with the instruments and implements to transform a raw material into a given product.
