The Puerto Plata Destination Tourism Cluster and the Playa Dorada Hotel Association welcomed the decision of the Directorate General of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP) to declare the private initiative Autopista del Ámbar (Amber Highway) to be of public interest.
The initiative, which seeks to build a highway linking Puerto Plata and Santiago, reducing travel time by 25 minutes, is a proposal that has been promoted by the local private sector for several years.
César José de los Santos, president of both entities, considered that this road would give an extraordinary impulse to the development of the northern region, boosting domestic tourism, real estate tourism and investments in different areas in the area.
“The Tourism Cluster of Puerto Plata and the Hotel Association of Playa Dorada, express their enthusiasm for this initiative, which will give a great boost to the efforts to recover the economy of the region, beyond the present situation caused by the Covid-19, we are sure that once this work becomes a reality, the development of the entire northern region will receive an extraordinary boost”. expressed De los Santos.
The private initiative Autopista del Ámbar includes the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a 32.4 kilometer toll road, with a 4-lane express highway of 3.65 meters, to travel safely at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
The work would represent a considerable saving in travel time and fuel consumption for hundreds of people who commute daily between Puerto Plata and Santiago, while improving air connectivity in the region by reducing travel time for passengers arriving and departing through the Cibao International Airport, adding to the supply of seats offered by the Gregorio Luperón International Airport in this province.
