Caribbean queens beat Puerto Rico to remain undefeated

The Dominican Republic obtained its third straight victory after defeating Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-20), in the continuation of the XIX Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup, which is being held at the Ricardo -Gioriver- Arias Palace.

The Queens of the Caribbean managed to dominate the blocking 11-4 and also led the serving 7-0, to hand the Puerto Ricans their third loss in the tournament that awards points for the FIVB ranking.

Yonkaira Peña led the offensive attack for the Creoles with 14 points. She was followed by Gaila Gonzalez with 13 and Prisilla Rivera with 7 points.

For the losers, Isabel Bauza contributed 9 points, escorted by Gabriela Alicea with 6.

“I think the girls have been playing good games, we have been moving the veteran players with the younger ones so that they can mature their rhythm of play and so far it is giving us results, I hope everything continues to go as it has been so far,” said Marcos Kwiek, coach of Dominican Republic.

So far, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. team are 3-0, while Canada is 2-1, Mexico 1-2, Cuba 0-3 and Puerto Rico 0-3.

Puerto Rico, at 3:00 p.m., followed by the United States vs. Cuba, 5:00 p.m., while Canada and the Dominican Republic will play at 7:00 p.m.
