Dominican Republic to fight for bronze after losing to United States

The offense was conspicuous by its absence and based on home runs the Americans won 3-1 to advance to the semifinals.

With home runs by Triston Casas and Tyler Austin, the United States defeated the Dominican Republic 3-0 to earn their place in the semifinals where they will face the loser of the match between Japan and South Korea.

The Dominicans will be able to fight for the bronze, waiting for the semifinals to be defined to know their opponent, in their last game in Tokyo 2020.

Timely offense was the main problem for the Dominicans, who left 7 men on base and went 8-0 with runners in scoring position.

The only run of the game for the Dominicans was a solo home run in the ninth inning by catcher Charlie Valerio off the bat of closer David Robertson.

The Dominicans squandered an excellent opportunity in the first episode where they were able to fill the bases and did not take advantage of an error by left fielder Patrick Kivlehan to ground out to left-hander Kazmir.

On the other hand, the United States answered with a huge home run through center field by Casas that brought in two runs for the Americans, after Tyler Austin got on base on a bunt.

In the fifth inning it was Austin’s turn, who also hit a four-corner shot to center field against reliever Gabriel Arias, who replaced Diego Goris in the roster.

Dominican starter Denyi Reyes took the loss after throwing four complete innings with two hits, two runs allowed, two tickets and four strikeouts. The pitching was completed by Arias with two innings of one run and three strikeouts, Jairo Asencio and Junior García with one blank inning each with one strikeout.

The Dominican offense fired only five hits, which belonged to José Bautista, Erick Mejía, Melky Cabrera, Charlie Valerio and Yefri Pérez. Julio Rodríguez and Johan Mieses were blanked in four innings, Juan Francisco and Jeison Guzmán 3-0 and Gustavo Núñez 2-0.

The Dominican Republic will have to wait for the outcome of the semifinal matches between Japan, South Korea and the United States to know its opponent in the match on August 7, where the bronze medal will be disputed.
