DR ranks 59th for Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Dominican Republic ranked 59th out of 206 countries in the overall medal count of the XXXIII Olympic Games, which concluded this Sunday in this city, after winning one gold medal and two bronze medals.

With its 16th participation in the Summer Olympics, and six consecutive cycles with at least one medal in Olympic events, the Dominican Republic also ranked sixth in Latin America, behind countries such as Brazil, which won three gold, six silver and nine bronze medals, Cuba, with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Third place went to Ecuador, with one gold, two silver and one bronze, while Argentina came in fifth with one gold, one silver and one bronze, and Chile was fifth, with one gold and one silver medal.

The country’s best historical position in the general Olympic medal table was in Los Angeles 1984 (45th), followed by London 2012 (46th), Beijing 2008 (47th), Tokyo 2020 (69th), Paris 2024 (59th) and Rio de Janeiro 2016 (78th).

With the gold medal and Olympic record in the 400 meters flat, Marileidy Paulino put the Quintana Roo delegation at the top, while boxing once again made history by winning two medals for the first time in the Olympics, both bronze medals with athletes Yúnior Alcántara, in the 51 kilograms, and Cristian Pinales, in the -80 kilograms.

Yudelina Mejía took an honorable fifth place in the 81 kg weightlifting, while Beatriz Pirón, in her fourth participation in the Olympic Games, was seventh in the 49 kg, and Crismery Santana finished in ninth place.

The Caribbean Queens, with a 1-3 record, once again remained in the quarterfinals, while men’s soccer finished in 12th place with a record of one setback and two ties, leaving a good taste in their Olympic debut.

In athletics, José González finished eighth in the elimination round of the 100 meters flat and, due to an injury to his right leg, was unable to compete in the 200 meters sprint.

Alexander Ogando placed fifth in the 200 meter dash. In the 400 meter dash, the athlete was withdrawn from the repechage round by decision of his coach Felix Sanchez.

Yeral Núñez was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles repechage, while the mixed 4×400 quartet was eighth in the elimination round.

Gymnast Audrys Nin Reyes finished 16th in the artistic gymnastics vault, while Eduardo Lorenzo finished 20th in the skeet shooting pit, and rider Yvonne Losos was 57th in the individual dressage equestrian modality.

Robert Florentino finished 17th and Moira Morillo ninth in the judo tournament, while Elizabeth Jiménez was 33rd and Javier Núñez 57th in swimming. In trampoline, Victoria Garza finished 27th, Frandiel Gómez 23rd and Jonathan Ruvalcaba ninth.

In taekwondo, Bernardo Pie placed 11th in -68 kilos and Madelyn Rodríguez was 11th in -67 kilos, and José Miguel Pérez Sosa, in wrestling, was in the round of 16 in the 97 kilos freestyle.
