Golf: Making “one-stroke holes” for tourism

In golf, when a player puts the ball directly into the hole with one stroke, he makes an excellent “hole in one”.

The global golf tourism market could make its “hole in one” during 2021-2025 when it grows annually despite the pandemic times.

The growth would show that despite a 17.83% drop, during the two years of epidemic this sport can become a magnificent recovery tool for the international tourism industry.

According to international experts, the global tourism market is already being driven by the growing worldwide appeal of golf and the increasing popularity of professional golf tournaments.

In addition to the giant golf market in the United States, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean have also been registering visible growth for some time now.

A much-admired golf destination in the Caribbean region is the Dominican Republic revived by the worldwide reopening that continues despite the sudden emergence of the Omicron mode.

The Dominican Republic is an esteemed destination in terms of golf.

That country has been recognized as a 2019 Golf Destination in Latin America and the Caribbean and by the IAGTO Awards given by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

The Caribbean climate and landscape are allies of this outdoor sport that is usually practiced in large areas.

According to figures immediately prior to the global pandemic, the Caribbean boasts more than 100 golf clubs and 1,150 exclusive hotels for sportsmen and women.

Another island leading the sport’s potential in the area is Cuba.

Before global tourism was halted or slowed by Covid-19, the Cubans had three joint venture golf development projects planned for Cienfuegos, the city Cubans call the “pearl of the south”.

The multi-stage project planned to include the construction of a 450-room 5-star hotel with an 18-hole golf course, and some 450 villas and 1,150 apartments.

Also planned were two more golf courses, new residential projects and the development of real estate and hotel infrastructure with links to other tourist centers such as the northern keys of Villa Clara, Varadero and Havana.

Cuba usually invites golf lovers to elite international events such as the Gran Torneo de Golf de Cuba with professional players or amateurs over 18 years old with certified handicap.

Golf is a tourist modality with great potential in the Caribbean, according to experts consulted by TTC.

Golfers, including renowned ones, often visit the Caribbean region as tourists and as players, especially from the United States and Canada.

Golf has been played since the days of the Roman Empire. Historians believe that a game similar to what is now known as golf was played in Rome.

Many centuries later the sport boomed in Scotland, from where it is said to have taken its name.

After the pandemic and its negative results, it is time for this once aristocratic and minority sport to help the popular tourism industry move again with the financial agility it requires.
