Mexico began the quest for the U23 Baseball World Cup Bicampionship

The Under 23 Baseball World Cup was inaugurated this September 23rd, where Mexico’s representative team will face the Czech Republic. The tournament will be held in Hermosillo and Ciudad Obregon and will last approximately one week. The closing match is scheduled for next Saturday, October 2.

The best age-grouped teams in the world will compete in intense matches divided into two groups to play approximately 50 games. The Yaquis Stadium will be the setting for the duels of the Mexican team, which is one of the favorites to become champion after winning the title in the 2018 edition held in Colombia.

The Mexicans will have to overcome the obstacles proposed by the selections of the Czech Republic, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Germany and Chinese Taipei, countries that make up Group A of the competition. The first three places in each group will be awarded a ticket to the final round.

Monterrey was the first host city of this tournament that had its inaugural edition in 2016, where the young Japanese baseball players became world champions, demonstrating superiority and a prolific future ahead.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 2020, however, due to the problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the current edition had to be postponed to this year 2021. For this reason, 24-year-old players were allowed to participate, even though they are no longer of age, something similar to what happened in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with the national soccer teams.

In this 2021 edition, three countries that have already achieved a medal in the U23 World Cup will be participating. They are Mexico, Venezuela and Korea, nations that managed to position themselves in the first places of the past tournaments.

WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari stated in the days leading up to the start of the competition about what it means to organize this tournament: “It is the greatest honor in baseball to play for your country and we wanted to do everything possible to serve the athletes while preserving the integrity of the original 2020 event″.

This World Cup will be broadcast to more than 600 million fans of the sport on the diamond. Fans will be able to enjoy the tournament in three different languages: English, Korean and Spanish. Megacable, one of Mexico’s leading telecommunications companies, will provide production services as host broadcaster.
