Pirates promote Dominican Republic’s Domingo German

His contract was selected by the team for Friday’s series opener against the Dodgers.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are adding major league experience to their pitching staff.

Domingo German and his contract are expected to be selected by the Pirates on Friday for the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez . All this comes after German exercised his release clause on July 17 before re-signing four days later on July 21.

Mitch Keller, Paul Skenes and Bailey Falter were scheduled to be the three starters for the series against the Dodgers, so German’s promotion could push them back in the rotation to give them additional rest or German will join the bullpen.

German, 32, had another termination clause scheduled for Saturday, so this promotion will keep the righty with the team going forward. He has struggled at times in the minors this season, posting a 6-4 record with a 5.12 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 14 starts.

Overall in his MLB career, the 32-year-old pitcher has a 4.41 ERA in 522 1/3 innings. The right-handed pitcher is also the last pitcher in the majors to throw a perfect game, dating back to June 28, 2023, as a member of the New York Yankees.
