San Lázaro takes the lead in the district basketball tournament

The Dominican-Boricua Justin Reyes and American Raphiael Putney continue to wreak havoc and this Tuesday, they once again helped San Lazaro club win a dramatic and close game against Rafael Barias club, 74-73.

Earlier in the day, Bameso defeated San Carlos, 70-63, led by 15 points from Michael Baez. San Carlos reinforcements Isaiah Austin and Kyndall Dykes scored 19 points each. It is Bameso’s first win in three games.

Reyes scored 16 points and Putney 15 to lead the offense in the third win in a row for the Lazareños, directed by Freddy Sanchez, with which they remain undefeated 3-0 in the regular round of the TBSDistrict 2021, in a game held at the Palacio de los Deportes Profesor Virgilio Travieso Soto.

Reyes and Putney have played a direct role in San Lázaro’s three wins.

The Jobo Bonito team is the only one with an unblemished record so far in the tournament, in its fifth day of action of the regular round, with a chance to tie it this Wednesday with the winner of the game between Mauricio Baez and Huellas del Siglo, both with 2-0.

On their side, Barias, with Joel Ramirez as foreman, lost for the first time and remain with a 2-1 record.

The TBSDistrict 2021 awards four places in the classification to the semifinal series (1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd, at 3-2), with seven regular round games for each of the eight participating teams, dedicated to Andrés Van Der Horts and as an option for the BanReservas Cup.

Reyes added six rebounds and seven assists to his offense, and Putney added 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Yeison Montero supported both with 12 points.

The Lazareños’ victory spoiled the superb offensive performance of Barias’ LJ Figueroa with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and of the North American Paris Bass with 26 points and 20 catches, for double figures each.

Barias gave the first blow at the end of the first 10 minutes of the game, 23-11, an advantage of 12 points, and in the second half they gave space to Jobo Bonito who won 15-20, and left the first half still up by seven points, 38-31.

Figueroa made the difference with 16 points for Barias, before the halftime break, and the North American reinforcement Paris Bass completed double figures: 13 points and 10 rebounds.

For San Lázaro, Yeison Montero and Orlando Sánchez had eight points each.

Wednesday’s games

The TBSDistrict continues this Wednesday with a double bill starting at 7:00 pm, with the game between El Millón (0-2) vs. Los Prados (0-2), both in search of their first victory.

Second, at 9:00 p.m., the teams of Mauricio Baez (2-0) and Huellas del Siglo (2-0) will play against each other to extend their unbeaten streak.
