Grupo Piñero, a Spanish tourism company with more than 40 years of history, is promoting the Samaná biodiverse, clean and sustainable initiative to position this region of the Dominican Republic as an ecological destination through environmental education activities, restoration and pilot waste management projects, according to local Dominican media.
This initiative, promoted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Grupo Piñero and German Development Cooperation (GIZ), began its first working days this week.
The working group went on a tour of good practices in waste management in the Dominican Republic, where they visited the municipalities of Sabana Yegua, Las Placetas and Santiago, to learn first-hand about different initiatives to identify success stories to develop the implementation of pilot projects for waste management in the province of Samaná.
A planning workshop was also held for the ‘Samaná biodiverse, clean and sustainable’ alliance to be implemented in the coming months, with the participation of different actors such as the Viva Wyndham company, CEBSE, the Caribe Circular project and the Biodiversity and Business program, the latter from GIZ.
The Samaná Biodiverse, Sustainable and Clean Samaná project is part of the Integrated Coastal Management Plan (PGIL) launched by the company in 2019, which aims to plan and sustainably manage the territory and natural resources of the destinations where it is present.
Through this public-private partnership, the project seeks to raise awareness among key stakeholders in the region of the benefits provided by biodiversity and thus promote its preservation.
In addition, the next phases of the project will include measures to promote environmental education in several schools in the area, the conservation and recovery of natural resources in the province of Samaná, and a response to one of the main environmental needs, waste management in the region.
This initiative is part of the Somos Ecoístas movement, with which Grupo Piñero publicizes its environmental strategy and through which it wants to invite everyone to bring out the ‘Ecoist’ side in them and participate in caring for our planet.
