Abinader highlights record figures in tourism sector

During his speech for the 179th anniversary of National Independence, Abinader highlighted that during 2022, 8.4 billion dollars were registered in foreign exchange income from tourism.

For the first time in the history of Dominican tourism, 8.4 million visitors were received in 2022, of which more than 7 million arrived by air and 1.3 million were cruise ship passengers.

In addition, in this same year $8.4 billion dollars were registered in foreign exchange earnings from tourism.

“While the world still has a 37% gap with respect to before the pandemic, our country grew by double digits,” said theAbinader Destaca las Cifras del Sector Turistio President, while indicating that the number of flights arriving to the country was 59,458, which grew by 11% compared to the best pre-pandemic year.

He also indicated that the numbers of the tourism sector allow it to continue contributing to the stability of the exchange rate of our country.

In this context, he stated that hotel occupancy reached historically high levels, with an annual average close to 75%; the economy of households that live off short-term rentals, had an increase in occupancy from 25% to 35%, while the hotel, bar and restaurant sector is responsible for more than 30% of economic growth, and therefore for sustaining and creating jobs.

US$ 433 million for first tourism projects in Pedernales

“One of the greatest legacies that this government will leave to this country will be the tourist development of Pedernales, a bet for the economic and social development of the south that will benefit besides Pedernales, Barahona, Independencia, Bahoruco and San Juan de la Maguana, with a safe and close market for their agricultural products”, emphasized the President.

In this sense, he highlighted that to date, the investment for the tourist development of Pedernales amounts to 433 million dollars. Of these, 335 million dollars correspond to the construction of the first three hotels with 1,600 rooms under development and generating some 2,200 direct jobs and 6,600 indirect jobs.

Another $98 million dollars correspond to the Port of Cabo Rojo “where Norwegian Cruise Line has already announced the arrival of cruise ships starting in January 2024”.

He added that in this first four-month period of 2023, the bidding process for the Pedernales International Airport, to be built in Oviedo, will begin and that the construction of the project’s access roads, water and sewage works, the aqueduct, the electrical substation and the Enriquillo-Pedernales highway are at an advanced stage.

Development of local tourism

Among the initiatives launched by the Ministry of Tourism, the head of State mentioned “Tourism in Every Corner”, promoting non-traditional destinations; “Turizoneando”, to highlight the main attractions of the Colonial City; and the construction and renovation of the Malecon de Cabrera, El Quemaito and Los Patos beaches in Barahona, the accesses and roads of Playa Macao, Playa Cenote or Esmeralda, among many others.

In addition, in a public-private alliance, since 2021, the development of Miches has been underway, with the start of 7 new hotels and generating a new sustainable destination in the northeast of the country.

And in Puerto Plata we already have the design to begin construction of the first stage of Punta Bergantin, with agreements with themed hotels, innovation centers and film studios.
