Following the award to the Spanish group Acciona of the construction of the airfield at Cabo Rojo International Airport, the executive director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), Sigmund Freund, explained that the Acciona Group achieved the total score in the evaluation of the technical proposal for being the company with the most experience and conditions of the three pre-qualified.
He emphasized that Acciona “is one of the largest Spanish construction companies in the world, with extensive experience in this type of works, as its portfolio includes the construction of more than 10 airports around the world”.
In addition, he said that the relevance of the start of the works of the future terminal will bring new employment opportunities, entrepreneurship and development for the community of Oviedo, Pedernales and the entire province.
“The works that have begun will connect Cabo Rojo, its tourist offer and the entire southern region with the world”, he assured.
It is recalled that Acciona was selected after an open, public and transparent bidding process promoted in several “Roadshows” or presentations to investors, both nationally and internationally.
The contract with Acciona amounts to RD$ 3,961 million and the project is expected to be executed in a period of 16 months and contemplates the construction of a 3.1 kilometers long and 60 meters wide runway, in addition to a taxiway, stop and safety zones, runway safety strip, aircraft parking aprons with capacity for five Boeing 777, 300 series airplanes and drainage works.
Subsequently, in a second phase, the construction of the control tower, a fire station, the electrical substation, and a hydrosanitary plant is planned. In other phases, the passenger and cargo terminal will be built.
The awarded company brings its proven international experience in the management and construction of airport infrastructures, which guarantees that the first stage of the Cabo Rojo Airport project will meet the highest international standards, according to a press release.
The Acciona group has participated in the design and construction of more than 40 airport projects, including the construction of the iconic Terminal T4 at the Adolfo Suárez-Barajas airport in Madrid (Spain), the construction project for the new terminal at Fiumicino airport in Rome (Italy), the Spanish airport in Malaga and the new passenger terminal at Barcelona airport. Recently, it has been awarded the project for the rehabilitation of the runways at Porto Airport (Portugal).
