Severino and Sanchez lead historic night for the DR

Five Dominican pitchers opened the game that night.

Last Saturday, August 17, the Dominican starting pitching had a historic night in terms of performance on the mound.

Luis Severino (NYM), Cristopher Sánchez (PHI), Osvaldo Bidó (OAK), Brayan Bello (BOS) and Freddy Peralta (MIL) had the responsibility of putting their respective teams in a favorable situation to win, and they did it, in a night that may be unprecedented for Dominican starting pitching.

These five Dominican pitchers had a combined performance of 36 innings pitched, in which they allowed 13 hits, including three doubles and three solo homers which were the only runs allowed in an extraordinary day of 27 strikeouts and only eight walks. The overall record of the Dominican starters was 5-0 with 0.75 ERA and 0.58 WHIP.

Two complete games

The complete game is an endangered species in modern baseball, however, Severino and Sánchez managed to get through all nine innings of their games to achieve the feat of having two Dominican pitchers with complete games in one date for the 17th time in the history of Dominican baseball in the Major Leagues, according to Eric José Lantigua in his X account.

The first occurrence of this phenomenon took place on May 19, 1970, when Santiago Guzmán and Juan Marichal achieved the feat, and the most recent occurrence, before the formidable work of Severino and Sánchez, took place on July 6, 2016, when Johnny Cueto and Ervin Santana, managed to travel the entire route without difficulty.

Severino struck out four, gave up one base on balls and struck out eight batters, while Sánchez allowed two hits and one clean run, no walks and struck out four batters.

Andujar, Soto and Perez had the most occurrences

Santiago Guzmán and Juan Marichal were the pioneers among pitchers who combined to complete their commitments on the same day in May 1970, but the leaders in this prestigious and strange list in terms of appearances are Joaquín Andújar (4), Mario Soto (4) and Mélido Pérez (3).
